About the SLHS
The Sand Lake Historical Society is a local history society formed in 1974 in anticipation of the Bicentennial Year, 1976. The mission of the Sand Lake Historical Society is to educate and promote preservation and conservation of the history and culture of the Town of Sand Lake and the surrounding area.
The Sand Lake Historical Society’s course of action is to be involved in the community, thereby promoting the appreciation of the area’s unique place in Rensselaer County and New York State history.
What does the SLHS do?
- We give memorial awards annually to two outstanding graduates of Averill Park High School excelling in history
- We research and create historical roadside markers
- We write and publish multiple print and digital publications
- We maintain a reference library, housed at the Sand Lake Town Library
- We research and help fund historic house plaques
- We offer local historic house/building/site and sightseeing tours
- We provide assistance in house dating and genealogical studies
In order to continue these informative and historically relevant projects, the Sand Lake Historical Society holds fundraising events. They include:
- Special events such as our annual holiday and spring galas
- Sale of publications both printed and digital
- Raffles and Auction Items
- Appraisal days for community members
- Participation in community functions (such as Sand Lake Townwide Cleanup Day)
Meetings are generally held the second Tuesday of each month, beginning at 7:00 p.m., typically in the Courtroom of the Sand Lake Town Hall, 8428 NY 66, Sand Lake, New York 12153, unless otherwise noted.
