We are thrilled to announce our partnership in establishing a Historical Museum on the ground floor of the historic Sand Lake Veterans Hall at 2957 NY-43, Averill Park, NY. To celebrate this significant milestone we will host a Sand Lake Veterans Day Open House on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2025

The town of Sand Lake and its surrounding region are steeped in history, and both the town and the Historical Society possess a vast collection of historical artifacts that deserve to be shared with our community and with future generations. From Military-related items like Moscow, the Civil War horse, to historic guests like Teddy Roosevelt at our hotels, mills along the Wynantskill, amusement venues featuring Mascot the carousel horse, and even an unsolved murder mystery, there’s a wealth of historical stories waiting to be told.

In 2025, the Sand Lake Historical Society celebrated its 50th anniversary. Since its inception there has been a long-standing discussion about establishing a physical museum to educate and share our town’s rich history. This dream is finally becoming a reality as the Historical Society collaborates with the Veterans of Sand Lake to create a History Museum on the ground floor of the historic Sand Lake Veterans Hall.

We hope to feature professional, permanent, and special interest displays that showcase the historical significance of our area. We are currently in the early stages of this project, with the goal of restoring the veterans building (which was previously the 1887 #7 schoolhouse) to its original grandeur. This restored building will serve as a showcase for our town’s history, a testament to our commitment to preserving our past for future generations.

To make this endeavor a reality we are actively seeking federal, state, and county grants and funds. We will also be organizing fundraising events and soliciting volunteers and donated items to support our project.
